Mountain Grass Unit, from Birmingham, Alabama, is a young quartet redefining bluegrass with a fresh, high-energy sound. Comprised of Drury Anderson (mandolin, vocals), Luke Black (guitar, vocals), Josiah Nelson (fiddle, vocals), and Sam Wilson (bass, vocals), they blend tradition with bold exploration, weaving bluegrass with elements of country, jazz, funk, rock, and even metal. Their debut EP, Runnin’ from Trouble (2024), showcases both original songs and inventive covers, drawing inspiration from icons like Tony Rice and Billy Strings. Recorded at Nashville’s Hartland Studios and produced by Mike Harris of Old Crow Medicine Show, the project captures the band’s raw live energy. Standout tracks include the reflective lead single “Hey Mama,” alongside “Cicada Song” and “Smugglin’,” which highlight the group’s range from funk-driven grooves to traditional bluegrass roots.
